This recap of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel looks at the history of the public transport network in Berlin. And takes a deep dive into the highs and lows (pun intended) of blood glucose management during the 59 stages.
The final Stage of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel arrived! A beautiful sunny day meant I could really enjoy this lovely ride between Berlin and Potsdam. Once finishing the final route – the U3 – I celebrated with Nadja at the Brandenburg Gate. Very proud to have completed all the public transport routes.
The penultimate Stage of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel focused on bus and tram routes that serviced the “Müggel” areas in the south east of Berlin. Woods, canals, “mountains” and lakes were all on the menu. Plus an adorable bus route served by a mini-bus!
Stage 57 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel was a lesson in insulin sensitivity. I had to constantly eat to keep my blood glucose in a safe range! Thankfully wearing a CGM helped prevent any dangerous lows. Aside from ever present blood glucose issues, I explored some lovely urban and green areas within Berlin while ticking off another five bus and one tram route.
Stage 56 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel took on five bus routes around eastern Berlin. A cultural stop at the Schloss Biesdorf and lakeside stop at the Müggelsee were a great relief after car-bicycle tensions earlier in the Stage.
Stage 55 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel toured the northeast districts of Berlin and beyond. On the way back to central Berlin, a stranger stopped me for advice of buying a bicycle – the perks of wearing all the cycling gear.
Stage 54 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel took on 8 bus routes around the south western districts of Berlin. I was joined by Nick for the final time of this Grand Tour and he successfully completed all the bus routes but couldn’t make it home without incident! We saw a graceful grass snake swimming across the Teltow Canal and enjoyed some coffee and cake too.
I finally completed all of the S-Bahn routes during Stage 53 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel. This was the S3 running from West to East and I took in some brutalist architecture and cycled through the long stretches of forest. There was also a refreshing summer rainfall too on the way back to central Berlin.
Stage 52 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel was a bit of a sweat-fest. But I saw cats and sheep, a waterfall and some of the best buildings Berlin has to offer!
Stage 51 of the Grand Tour de Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel would again take me out of Berlin where I visited the neighbouring towns of Potsdam and Teltow. I took the opportunity to explore the Düppel forest between Potsdam and Berlin and discovered some great graffiti on ruins of train tracks.
